Anne Thompson in Chile, November 21-28 2004
Thanks to FONDECYT international we had the estimulating and enchanting visit
of Dr. Anne Thompson from NASA/Goddard Flight Center.
- Nov 21-22. Anne participated in a workshop in which we reviewed the
research we are involved in, particularly that related to ozone in the
Southern Subtropics, but also about inverse modeling, radiative transfer,
parallel computing.... During that workshop she gave a couple of detailed
presentations about SHADOZ and
the art of measuring ozone in our atmosphere.
- Nov 23. We visited the station at Tololo and the astronomic
observatory of Cerro Pachón (amazing too!!). After lunch under the sun, Anne
gave an open lecture at the University of La Serena.
- Nov 24. Anne and the Santiago team flew back to the south, i.e.,
from 30S to 33.5S...we started discussing the data collected over the years at
Rapa Nui and Tololo
- Nov. 25. We kept discussing the data ...what to write about? How to
combine Rapanui and Shadoz?...In the afternoon, Anne gave a talk at the Center
for Mathematical Modeling
- Nov. 26. We defined our common papers...analyzed the data,
including the first complete ozone sounding that meanwhile had been collected
at Vicuña by Ana María, Martin et al.
- Nov. 27-28...We discussed, in addition to science, the meaning of
life and the sense of Nerudian poetry..."El océano Pacífico es tan grande, tan
grande que no supieron dónde meterlo y lo dejaron frente a mi ventana...habría
dicho Neruda en La Sebastiana".
