Workshop on Symbolic Dynamics on finitely presented Groups

December 15 - 19, 2014
CMM, Santiago de Chile, Chile

CMM frontpage note about the workshop

Goal:

A one-week workshop on symbolic dynamics will be held at Santiago de Chile on the dates December 15-19, 2014. It aims to gather Ph.D. students, young investigators and experts working in particular on one- as well as multidimensional subshifts, tilings, cellular automata and on symbolic actions of (finitely presented) groups, where we hope to see some of the latest developments in each of those fields. The workshop will consist of 3 minicourses and several individual talks. (Participants interested in presenting their work are invited to send a title and abstract in order for the organizers to select the individual talks.)

Remark: We would like to point out that this workshop is part of a three week period of conferences on dynamics taking place in Chile in December 2014. We start our Dynamic month with a School on Orbit Equivalence and related fields (held in Santiago during December 1-5) followed by the traditional bi-annual international conference Information and Randomness 2014 (held in Puerto Varas in Chile's lake region during December 9-12) to finish with the above described workshop. People interested in participating in two or all three conferences should contact the respective events' organizers.

Inscription:

Update (October 1st): Since the registration deadline has passed (and we did spend our budget vouching for financial support to the already registered participants) at this moment we can only accept further registrations from people not requesting support.

If you would like to participate and are able to cover your expenses, you are still welcome to send an email to mschraudner@dim.uchile.cl.

People planning to participate in this workshop should send an email to mschraudner@dim.uchile.cl before August, 2014.

There will be a limited number of fellowships covering travel support and/or living expenses for non-local participants; preferably to be spend on young mathematicians.
People requiring financial support can send a request, specifying the type of financial support (transportation, room, board) to the above email address. Requests should include a statement of their interest in the workshop and a short CV. Students applying for funding should additionally hand in a letter of recommendation by a university professor or mathematician (send directly to the same email address) before the date mentioned above.
The candidates applying for financial support will be informed about the funding decision in late August.

Non-student participants (postdocs, researchers, professors) will have to pay an inscription fee of 30.000 CLP (about US$60), which will include the workshop's material and cover coffee breaks.
