Something about Temuco

The intense green of unknown trees, exotic species with names like coigue, mañío or araucaria, water the colour of semiprecious stones, the air itself, pure as spring water, make the south of Chile strangely atractive and exciting as if our animal past were calling upon us to recover the simplest part of ourselves. These are regions of wild, almost untouched corners, where the traveller can choose between amazement at the extraordinary natural beauty or turn inwards, thinking and rethinking the role of the human being in the natural world. The Region of Araucania and Region of Lakes, usually referred to together as the Lakes Region, stretch from Temuco through Valdivia and Osorno to Puerto Montt, a distance by highway of 339 km. This also includes the archipielago of Chiloe, just off the coast from Puerto Montt. Temuco is the door to this wonderful region. Temuco in mapudungun, the Mapuche languague, means "Water of Temu", it is the capital of Region de la Araucania, the IX Region, It is located at 675 kms to the south of Santiago city, arranged by the Cautín river with its majestic hills Ñielol and Conun Huenu, and the Llaima volcano. This territory was discovered about 1552 by the Spanish Conquer Pedro de Valvidia, who at that time founded the cities Imperial, now Carahue. Valdivia had to face the strong resistence of Mapuches that had lived in the region for centuries. Temuco as a city, was founded on February 24, 1881 by Manuel Recabarren. Its origin was the Quinchas Fortification, builded by the Spaniers to stop the continuous attacks by indigenous. Around the fortification some population gathered producing a cultural mixture. Temuco nowadays is one of the most important cities of the country with Administrative Center, Shopings, Universities, turism and culture, besides it constitutes the door to the south of Chile. Temuco has a population of 240.000. Close to Temuco there are several centres for turism like Pucón, Lican Ray and Puerto Saavedra.
